Oakridge’s January Community Garden Message

Harvesting was completed for the 2020 season by the end of October so now our minds are turning to the spring of 2021. We are starting to order seeds, plan for 9 more raised beds and some tables and benches for garden community gatherings.

Looking back on the last few months of 2020, we managed to build our Vertical Garden, celebrate Halloween with our pumpkin carving contest, and put up poppies for Remembrance Day. We had also hoped to organize some seating and firepits for our Winter Wonderland but unfortunately, we were not able to persuade the OCA Board to approve this addition to our plans, due mainly to security and safety issues. Despite this, we added a Christmas tree and decorations to the Vertical Garden and raised beds, as well as Christmas hats on our scarecrows. We continued to participate in and fill our OCG ‘Free Standing Library’ as part of the OCA 50th Anniversary walking tours. Visit https://www.oakridgecommunity.ca/activities-new/walks/.

We now have most plots allocated for the 2021 growing season, so we are looking at building 9 more raised beds in the spring with new volunteer support/membership. We also have several OCG sub-committees looking at longer-term plans for perennial beds, a herb garden, seating areas and, if we get extra funding, sheds and greenhouses. We will be reviewing these plans with the OCA Board again in the New Year to ensure full alignment. We are hoping many Oakridge residents will see our accomplishments to date and join our early spring activities.

Membership is still through https://www.oakridgecommunity.ca/. We are trying to keep this updated, as well as via other Social Media channels.

Now that we have an upgraded OCA website, we hope to communicate these events more effectively to you at: https://www.oakridgecommunity.ca/activities-new/community-garden/.

Information is also posted at: https://www.oakridgemonitor.com/. Questions can be sent to [email protected]

We encourage members and residents to join the OCA and OCG and participate in our exciting upcoming gardening events in 2021.
