Tuxedo Park Community Drainage Improvements and Dry Pond coming in 2021
Thank you to everyone who was able to answer our Park Envisioning and Dry Pond survey which ran in February. We received a lot of responses that will help us speak on your behalf when we engage with the City.
TPCA was notified in early December 2020 that funding was approved for the critical flood mitigation work in our community. In order to meet funding requirements, the work must be completed in 2021. The drainage improvements include the following:
- New pipe installation on 18th Ave and 1st Street NE
- Pavement alterations along 1st Street NW
- Pipe upgrades along Center Street and 1st Street NE
- Pipe upgrades in Highland Park along 35th ave NE
- Dry pond installation in the greenspace of Tuxedo Park between Centre Street and 2nd Ave NE.
The area close to the TPCA Hall and residents just North of the hall on 31st Avenue NE experience frequent overland flooding when major rain events occur. These drainage improvements should mitigate this issue. The residents of 31st Ave have worked very hard to bring this forward to the City and continue to work alongside City representatives.
What is a Dry Pond?
A dry pond is described as a pond that, “is dry most of the time and may have playing fields in it. During heavy rain, dry ponds will fill with water very quickly. This prevents the stormwater system from becoming overwhelmed and helps to prevent water from backing up into basements, houses, and businesses.”
Park Envisioning Committee
The Tuxedo Park Community Association Board struck up a Park Envisioning Committee in December, comprising of four Board Members and the General Manager. The Committee’s mission is to understand what residents would like to see in the pending park work and in the long term. We expect the dry pond to be installed in the Spring/Summer of 2021 and hope that it will be built in such a manner that our community can create a beautiful outdoor activity and gathering space after its completion.
Community feedback was gathered via an online survey and the Committee will use those results to steer the City on the pending dry pond work, ensuring future park goals are considered and planned for. The survey information is currently being tallied and we will be reporting back to residents with a summary. The Committee will continue to work with the City and the residents of 31st Avenue, on the dry pond design and future possibilities for the park.
