Hello Signal Hill Neighbours,
Seasons of change are falling upon Signal Hill. Your community association board will be returning to our regular board meetings in September. For a number of years, the board has been guided by a very capable group of directors – particularly the executives. They have been a model of what fiduciary trust should be. We are grateful for their efforts. While several board members will be vacating their current positions, their collective legacy will continue to benefit our community for years to come. Even though some may be leaving specified roles, a number will remain on the board, offering valuable insights to our community.
Last May, the board elected me as President. Brian Lawrence offered to stay on as President for the summer months, with me starting the role next month (September). It has allowed me to ease into the position nicely and I thank Brian for making the transition a smooth one.
Allow me to introduce myself. I am first your neighbour. Until August, I lived with my family on Sirocco Drive. I now live in the Pavilions of Richmond Hill (Yes, Richmond is one of the many smaller communities that form the boundaries of the Signal Hill Community Association).
Even though I work full-time at the Richmond Co-op, my position allows me to concentrate my primary focus on supporting many endeavours in the community. I may be judging in a singing contest or hosting an online program or a grand opening somewhere. Even though my interests are varied, home is where we start. It is the priority. Community associations are home. Brian mentioned in his article that I have served in several CAs in a number of roles, including President of a community association.
In many ways, I’ll offer a different perspective for your Board. I am a renter, not a homeowner. I have a multi-cultural, generational family (three generations in one roof). So, I do reflect many of the demographics of newer families moving into our community.
We have a little paradise where we live, and it is attracting others to join us. They have much to offer and they will bring to us different ways of doing things – perhaps even an expanded view of what a community is. It will lead us to a greater sense of what a community can and will be.
In the meantime, things are already happening in our community! The library is building an interactive learning space that is outdoors and should be done in early fall. More and more businesses are resuming full services. Westside Recreational is starting to operate more services and programs.
Tom Cruise is making way for Thor, buses and the C-trains are fuller, and we just finished successfully returning the Calgary Stampede to the status of the “Greatest Outdoor Show”.
My friends and family truly believe that life can be short. So, let’s live life to the fullest. Start from home. Our community, Signal Hill.
