December is that time of year when the lights are bright, the decorations colourful, and the joyous sounds of music fill the air. So many Canadians from various cultural backgrounds find reasons to celebrate the best of humankind. At my home, the Christmas tree goes up and the excitement builds as the presents go under that tree. The smells of Christmas baking also bring to mind the Christmases past with family and good friends.
Edgemont Community Association is giving families a chance to celebrate at its December 10 Family Muppet Christmas Party to be hosted at the community centre. There will be a movie and crafts for children and some snacks for all. Check the website for the details.
Our seasonal displays are brightening up Edgemont. It always makes me smile to see them. I hope you are enjoying them, too. The ELM committee goes to great efforts to make those displays inviting.
ECA supports a Christmas hamper project to provide some support to those in our community that face food insecurity and have limited resources to put toward celebrations. You can help. See Jeff’s article in this newsletter. The ECA Board wants to recognize the volunteers who dedicate their time to this project – those who gift wrap, make donations, collect donations, deliver hampers, and so much more. In addition, thanks to those businesses in Edgemont that support the project. It provides a bright spot in the life of those in our subdivision who don’t have the same access to resources that many of us enjoy.
We are gearing up to flood our outdoor ice rink. This rink is very well used over the winter and provides good, wholesome fun for all. To keep this going, we always need more volunteers. If you are able to donate some time, contact Rick at [email protected].
Speaking of volunteers, it is never too early to start recruiting for our casino. We have been given April 25 and 26 as our dates at the Elbow River Casino. The chance to work a casino is critical to our ability to earn revenue to continue our programming and operations. There are a number of jobs that we need to fill so if you can help, mark these dates in your calendar and send an email to [email protected] or [email protected]. I’ll be sending out reminders in future newsletters as well as a list of the jobs for you to consider.
Unfortunately, I am hearing more chatter about scamming online and the potential for increased break and enters as those gifts seen in houses and cars lure some more than they can resist. Stay safe. Take all necessary precautions. Follow your instincts and when in doubt, don’t. If you fall victim, call police. Although it may not make the situation right for you, it may help someone else.
