The CKE Community Garden started the year off with a very successful movie night! On a Friday night in January, more than 25 community members gathered at the hall to view the excellent film Kiss the Ground. Viewers learned about the import role soil can play in efforts to combat climate change, and to all accounts, the film was very well received. Look out for more events coming up later this spring.

It’s still too early to think about digging in the soil, but if you need a way to get your garden fix, Seedy Saturday is the perfect remedy. Designed to encourage the use of heritage and open-pollinated seeds and to facilitate a local seed exchange, they also help to educate the public about seed saving and sustainable gardening practices. The first Seedy Saturday was held in 1990, organized by Sharon Rempel, a Vancouver-based organic agronomist and activist. Seedy Saturday events now occur annually in late winter across Canada and the UK. In Calgary, Seedy Saturday is on March 25 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Winston-Heights Mountview Community Association (520 27 Ave NE). With 25+ exhibitors, this free event is well worth attending.

Happy Gardening!
