Signal Hill President’s Message for June 2023

Last month’s (May) meeting was exciting! We had four mystery guests attend. They were individuals who had reached out with a desire to give to the community. After observing how our Board works, they accepted specific assignments, and a motion was passed to have them join the Board. Please join me in welcoming Curtis Lesperence as Technical Director; Aroop Rayu as Social Director; Harrison Yau as Business Relations Director, and Harrison’s wife, Chelsea MacMillan as Secretary. All four are eager to get started. Best wishes to you all!

In our last newsletter, we mentioned that we were going to tour greenspaces, parks, and facilities off our lease to see if there is a need or role that the community can support or advocate for. We will have to put that to the side until later in the summer. Which reminds me to mention that June is the last formal Board meeting. We will still be here during July and August though, so always feel free to reach out at info.shca.ca and we will respond to your query. If you have an area that you think we should consider, let us know.

Near the end of last month, we celebrated those who have volunteered in some way for the community. It could be by flooding the rink, working the bank at a casino, even mowing the lawn (they don’t trust me yet with the John Deere). Some do a number of these things. Not to be forgotten are those who devote their energy to spearheading such activities, members of the Board, and the three committees that plan and execute the various functions. Again, thank you all for your efforts.

Despite the smoke last month (I felt I was at a permanent BBQ), we’ve had an interesting start to spring. Or did we skip that season and land right in summer? Pedalheads will be returning soon, and other activities will start as soon as some of our new directors have had time to learn how to open their email box.

As a final note, I wanted to mention to you that Dan Mowat has resigned from the Board. He served with us for a relatively short time period but in spite of that length, his passion and skills helped this community with actions that will have a positive impact for many years to come. Thank you for giving us your full attention and a sincere focus on our biggest resource, our community site.
