Southland Crossing – Co-op Development and Construction Plans
A model and information of Co-op’s development is displayed at the entrance to the shopping mall. Demolition of the existing mall is continuing and should be completed by fall. Once complete, construction of the new food store will commence with a planned opening for late 2024, although deliveries of electrical gear may push this into early 2025. Once the new food store is open, Co-op will demolish the current food store, and begin the final phase of the project which includes residential development slated to be complete for 2026.
RioCan Development at Glenmore Landing
An ‘open house’ on RioCan’s plans for its three phased development at Glenmore Landing was held at PBPCA in early May. These ‘early’ plans involve using the currently green space along 90 Avenue for multistorey apartment buildings. Our concerns are mainly about the appropriateness of the locations and their impact on traffic, especially during construction. We are discussing how to positively influence this development and its impact on current residents within District 32.
Oakridge Area Upgrade Projects
Regarding our list of common Oakridge projects shared with our Ward 11 representatives, we remain cautiously optimistic that some of our projects will get approved and implemented, especially the road safety ones. Oakside Gate and 90 Avenue pedestrian lights installation has started and should be complete this summer. Palliser Drive and 29 St should also get road calming measures at the pedestrian crossing. We will have completed a survey of residents looking at a speed reduction on Palliser Drive from the posted 50km/hr and will share the results with Ward 11 and City representatives. We continue to observe other pedestrian crossing issues, such as Southland Drive and Oakmoor Way where posted speeds are 60 km/hr. The more residents document their concerns, the more likely the City will investigate and address them.
Residential Traffic Safety Unit (RTSU)
The Calgary Police Service – CPS RTSU continues to have monthly focus themes with current compliance issues on distracted driving, seatbelts, and speeding. OCA Facilities
The OCA Board is supporting a two-phase Parking Lot upgrade: upgrade of the existing parking lot during 2023 and an expansion to the North in 2024. The City will be contributing some funds for this effort. The OCA is also continuing to support the Enmax solar panel roof project with a potential implementation during this May 2023. We continue to look at other climate enhancing opportunities such as bike racks and electric charging stations as part of an expanded car park, growing trees, working with the Oakridge Community Garden, etc. We are also discussing other improvements with ‘Oh My Oakridge’ such as bike routes between green spaces.
District 32
Our next District 32 Meeting #20 will be on Thursday, June 8 and the CA will continue to share local issues of a common nature. Everything from road safety to ‘Development Permits’ to the RioCan expansion at Glenmore Landing and future LAP issues.
