Date is Neighbourhood Day. We sometimes forget, but Calgarians who are experiencing homelessness are also our neighbours—consider supporting them during your regular spring cleaning chores.

One of the most daunting aspects of a good spring cleaning is trying to figure out what to do with the items you no longer use. The Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre’s Donation Centre could be your answer; they accept all household donations, no matter what the condition. Items in need of retirement can be recycled or refurbished and the funds used to support programming. Gently used items will join the Move Out Program, which provides low-income Calgarians and people at risk of homelessness with the essential items they need to set up a home at zero cost. Partnering with 55 other Calgary agencies within the homeless-serving sector, this program has a broad reach, helping those in need on their next steps to be healthy, whole and housed.

On Neighbourhood Day (Saturday, June 16, 2018) the City is waiving its fees for approved block party and greenspace bookings, so you and your neighbourhood can host a block party for good – for free! Gather your neighbours and pool your donations! If you organize a multi-home donation drive, the Donation Centre will gladly come and can pick up your items.

We accept:

  • Bedroom items: mattresses, bed linens, clothing
  • Bathroom items: towels
  • Kitchenware: pots, pans, glasses, dishes, etc.
  • Small appliances: TVs, DVD players, telephones, toasters, kettles, coffee makers, microwaves
  • Electronics: computers, keyboards, mice, cell phones (all computers and cell phones are scrubbed and re-formatted)
  • Entertainment: books, toys, games, puzzles, DVDs
