Beltline: The Heart of City Living
Originally named after the Calgary Municipal Railway’s Route No. 5 trolley, the Beltline district boasts a heritage tied to Calgary’s early warehouses, some still standing today. Evolving over the years, Beltline has experienced remarkable development and population growth, driven by urban living investment and interest.
Situated at the southern edge of Beltline, 17th Avenue has emerged as a lively mixed-use area. Recognized as one of Calgary’s Business Revitalization Zones, Uptown 17th embodies a dynamic blend of bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and shops, earning the title of Calgary’s primary “party street.” Beyond its commercial vibrancy, the avenue is surrounded by thriving residential neighbourhoods. Beautiful murals can be found throughout the neighbourhood which only enhances the experience of city living.
Connaught School, along with the Calgary Board of Education’s main office, anchors the educational landscape of Beltline. These institutions play a vital role in shaping the academic environment within the community.
Beltline extends beyond the urban setting by incorporating parks that provide a breath of fresh air amidst city life. Haultain Park, Tomkins Park, and Connaught Off-Leash Dog Park are notable spots that offer a natural retreat, allowing residents to escape the city’s hustle and bustle without leaving its boundaries.

At the heart of Beltline, the Beltline Neighbourhoods Association unites West Connaught, Connaught Centre, Victoria Centre, and East Victoria. A grassroots organization initiated by dedicated residents, the association’s mission is to create an inclusive and diverse community. Open to all residents, it aims to enhance the Beltline’s appeal through community spirit, relationship-building, and support for recreational, cultural, social, athletic, and educational activities.
Demographic Snapshot
According to the City of Calgary’s 2021 Census, Beltline is home to 25,880 residents in private households, with a median household income of $71,000 pre-tax. Housing statistics reveal 16,985 occupied private dwellings, of which 86% are apartments in buildings with more than five stories. Owner households constitute 25%, while 75% are renter households.
Beltline stands out as a diverse community with 800 residents identifying with indigenous groups, mainly Metis and First Nations. Additionally, some belong to the Inuk Indigenous group or multiple indigenous groups. Immigrants make up 32% of the population in private households, contributing to the rich cultural fabric of Beltline.
