It’s easy to feel disconnected living in a big city where we feel powerless against poverty and crime. But it’s not hopeless. We can turn our feelings of compassion into action. Try these tips to make an impact in your community.

Listen with empathy and look for opportunities where you can help. Even small acts of service can make an impact on someone else’s life. Some examples include holding a door open, offering a ride, walking the dog or helping with some repairs.

You can also impact someone through an anonymous act of kindness. Write a note of encouragement, drop off some books at someone’s house or look after your neighbour’s yard when they are away.

Give a homemade meal to a friend or neighbour in distress. If you sense they are struggling, ask if you can provide a meal and give them a day’s notice so they can enjoy or make the most of their time knowing they don’t have to cook.

For a more lasting benefit, look for volunteer opportunities with organizations in your community. Places to start may be a local church, food pantry, or recreational program, like Scouts.
