I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in Ward 2 a very Merry Christmas! I am very optimistic for the upcoming year as we are starting to see some positive economic indicators that suggest improvements in our Calgary economy. We have also had some very good news in terms of new infrastructure projects in North Calgary.
I am very pleased that after many years of waiting, the provincial government has announced funding for a NEW High School in North Calgary. Our new communities in North Calgary are growing very quickly and the need for new schools is something I hear every day from residents in Ward 2. While schools are a provincial responsibility, I am pleased that the provincial government has listened to us and prioritized this new high school that will serve kids in many communities in North Calgary.
The City of Calgary and the Province of Alberta are jointly working on a long-term plan to upgrade Deerfoot Trail. Nearly 200,000 vehicles use Deerfoot Trail every day, including myself and many in Ward 2, who commute to work via Deerfoot Trail. I am particularly pleased with the proposed upgrades to Deerfoot Trail and Beddington Trail, which proposes an all directions interchange at this location. Another congestion point is at Deerfoot Trail and McKnight Blvd. The proposed changes for this location include a re-alignment of the off-ramp onto eastbound McKnight Blvd. One of the major upgrades proposed is to widen Deerfoot Trail to four lanes in each direction from Barlow Trail in the Southeast to Airport Trail in the North.
