The Legislature is back in session on March 8th and still start with the Speech from the Throne that will outline the government’s priorities for the 29th Legislative session. I expect that the government will bring forward its budget within a few weeks and then we will deliberate the budget in Estimates meetings.

Alberta’s economy has been doing better but we still have many Albertans out of work, and many of those people have not worked in many months; the recovery hasn’t included a strategy to get the skilled labour force that is currently idle back to work. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to ask the government about their plans for these people and how they will be tackling the sizable deficit the province is facing.

In December, I had the chance to join the Calgary Police Service District 7 for a Ride Along to find out what the major policing issues are in our city and it was an eye-opening experience. I really appreciate the dedication of our police force to our city. I also had the opportunity to attend the graduation of 17 provisional fire fighters from the Calgary Fire Department. I know that in addition to the sometimes-risky work of firefighting and attending to accidents and other incidents, fire fighters have a long tradition of community service that makes a big difference in our communities. If you see a CPS officer or a fire fighter take a moment to thank them for their service.
