We are coming to the end of the fall session of the Legislature where a number of important pieces of legislation were debated, including the introduction of our government’s first budget. Budget 2019 reflects our commitment to Albertans to live within our means while maintaining the critical services on which Albertans rely. Budget 2019 reduces spending by 2.8 percent over four years—that’s three cents on the dollar and far from the 20 percent reduction Albertans saw in the 1990s. It addresses a financial situation that already costs us $5 million a day in interest and balances the budget by 2022/23. It increases funding for mental health and social supports and protects funding for health and education.

We are also pleased to have passed Bill 17: Disclosure to Protect Against Domestic Violence Act (Clare’s Law). Clare’s Law, named for a British woman murdered by an intimate partner who had a history of violence towards women, allows people at risk of domestic violence to obtain information on an intimate partner’s previous criminal history. We also established the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation and the Technology, Innovation and Emissions Reduction program, the centrepiece of our government’s climate change strategy. These are all based on promises to Albertans during the election, which we’ve kept.
