With June, we have our first month of summer and our continued commitment to make life affordable and better for Albertans. Firstly, I would like to congratulate the class of 2018 on their graduation and wish them all success in whatever career path they choose.
In our busy spring sitting of the legislature, we have been focused protecting the jobs and livelihoods of thousands of Albertans by keeping Canada working and ensuring that the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline gets built. The introduction of Bill 12 Preserving Canada’s Economic Prosperity Act will give our government the tools to pressure BC to back down from its illegal roadblocks of the pipeline. Bill 12 would allow the government the tools necessary, to restrict the export of energy products to BC, if needed. These powers are not powers the government wants to use, but action will be taken for the benefit of the industry, for Alberta, and for Canada.
While we fight for the pipeline to be built, we continue to protect the services Albertans rely on. Our government has budgeted additional dollars into child care, expanding the $25-a-day child care program, 7,300 spaces have been budgeted for in 2018 province wide with 30 centres in Calgary providing 2,018 spaces. Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) Centres may offer flexible child care for parents who work part-time or shifts that are outside typical day care hours (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) or offer care in accessible settings such as co-location with other public buildings. The centres provide supports for children with diverse needs and implement an early learning child care curriculum. This is just one of the many programs and services offered to make life affordable and better for Albertans.
