A Brighter Future for Students and Graduates

As I write this, students are returning back to school – whether it’s to start kindergarten or complete a final year of high school or post-secondary education.

Our federal Liberal government has taken steps to support families, make education more affordable, and reduce the debt burdens on post-secondary students.

Here are some examples:

  • For Calgary families, we’re supporting 180,000 kids here in Calgary through the Canada Child Benefit. Calgary families who get the benefit receive $5,620 per year on average, tax free.
  • For post secondary students, we increased the Canada Student Grants by 50%. Full-time post-secondary students from low-income families can receive $3,000 per year, and students from middle-income families can receive $1,200. Plus, we’re helping you budget for your education by introducing a fixed Canada Student Loan contribution of between $1,500 and $3,000 per year.
  • For veterans, to help make a seamless transition from military to civilian life, there is up to $80,000 per person for post-secondary education through the new Education and Training benefit.
  • For the University of Calgary and other post-secondary institutions, we’re investing in state-of-the-art learning facilities and equipment.
  • For graduates, we’re making it so you don’t have to start repaying your student loan until you are making at least $25,000 per year.
  • For co-op students, we’re creating thousands of new work placements, including in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and business programs – with an extra focus on opportunities for women and indigenous students.
  • For apprentices, we’re investing to enhance pre-apprenticeship training, and helping unions and other skilled trade organizations modernize their equipment, materials and training.

We’re helping students afford a good education and gain meaningful work experience for a brighter future.
