MONTHLY UPDATE

Stephanie accepted the invitation to become a member of the Trilateral Commission. This non-governmental, non-partisan discussion group was founded by David Rockefeller in 1973 to foster closer cooperation among Japan, Western Europe and North America.

Calgary Stampede 2018

As usual, the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth was an event to remember, and Stephanie enjoyed every minute. From attending the opening Stampede breakfast and participating in the Parade, to the many community barbecues and pancake breakfasts, the ten days are always a very busy time but also a wonderful experience to see everyone in the Stampede spirit.

Defending Local Jobs

Recently, the United States has decided to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports. And now, they have threatened to impose tariffs on auto imports as well. TD Bank is warning that 160,000 jobs in the auto sector are at risk – this means that 20% of all manufacturing jobs in Canada could be lost. On top of the stalled TransMountain pipeline, these tariffs have created additional uncertainty in our steel, aluminum and auto industries, and they have left a growing group of Canadian workers worried about what will become of their jobs.

Islamic Centre of South Calgary 2018 Eid Gala

Stephanie welcomed the opportunity to attend the Islamic Centre of South Calgary Eid Gala earlier this month. Members of the community joined family and friends to celebrate the end of Ramadan and celebrate Eid. She enjoyed the opportunity to meet with the President of the Islamic Centre of South Calgary and other influential leaders in the community.

Eid Mubarak!

Ottawa is Studying the Special Access Program

This coming fall, the House of Commons Health Committee will be studying the needs of Canadians with rare diseases and the effectiveness of the Special Access Program. To help Canadians with rare diseases we have the Special Access Program that authorizes a manufacturer to sell a drug what cannot otherwise be sold or distributed in Canada. The Program works with practitioners and patients to access medications for treatment, diagnosis or prevention of serious or life-threatening conditions when conventional therapies are inadequate or unavailable. However, Canadians with rare diseases continue to face extensive barriers and the Health Committee intends to make recommendations to improve simplicity and efficacy of the Program.
