by Jonathan Jucker, Editor for the Brentwood Bugle

Dear Brentwoodians,

We did it again!

Once again, Brentwood has nabbed the top spot in Avenue Magazine’s annual ranking of Calgary neighbourhoods (https://www.avenuecalgary.com/best-neighbourhoods/). This comes as no surprise to those of us who call the area home, and it looks like the rest of the city is starting to wake up to the advantages of our little slice of the northwest.

As has been mentioned many times in these pages, the key factor in our success and desirability as a community is the level of engagement and contribution by our residents. A special mention should go to Bonita McCurry, president of the Brentwood Community Association, Linda Van Holst, the omnipresent office manager for the BCA, and all the volunteers on the board (listed in every issue of the Bugle) who give their time and effort to run the programs, events, and facilities that make Brentwood great.

I would also be remiss not to mention our amazing Bugle contributors, who inform and entertain every month – Cynthia Sim of the Community Gardening Group, Polly Lee Knowlton Cockett on the environmental front, Melanie Swailes of the Development and Transportation Committee, and Lee Hunt who brings us the great stories about the people in our neighbourhood who make a difference in the lives of their family, friends, and community.

Go jump in the pool!

As I write this on Labour Day weekend, there is a definite autumn nip in the air and frost warnings on the weather forecast. It feels like summer passed by even quicker than usual this year, thanks to the pandemic (and the weather at times) putting a damper on so many warm-weather activities. For those who missed swimming, the good news is that the Winston Churchill pool on Northmount Drive has re-opened after renovations, and is better than ever – and much more accessible for people with limited mobility. At present, swim times need to be booked in advance to comply with occupancy restrictions.

The tennis courts have also been beautifully redone, and should give many summers of service to the community – and Northmount Drive itself is almost as smooth now! With a long-overdue resurfacing, the potholes that often threatened to throw me off my bicycle or ruin my car’s suspension are gone, at least for a while.

These great amenities and improvements are more reasons why Brentwood will remain a great place to live, work, and play.
