We live on Treaty 7 lands, thus, we are considered the peoples of Treaty 7. On September 30, 2023, ECA, along with Westminster Presbyterian Church and Northwest Community Church, will host Rev. Tony Snow and Elders from the Stoney Nakoda Nation in Morley. It will be an opportunity to learn about the Indigenous peoples’ experiences of colonization using a blanket exercise, followed by a talking circle.

The blanket exercise was developed by Elders and educators to create an experiential learning tool to narrate the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in a Canadian context. The exercise includes storytelling, dialogue, as well as references to These Mountains Are Our Sacred Places – The Story of the Stoney People, written by Chief John Snow.

With Indigenous History Month in June, there were also many opportunities to learn about Indigenous culture and ceremonies, yet this blanket exercise experience offers an Indigenous representation of what happened to their ancestors when settlers first started arriving in Canada. There will be a limit of 50 participants, so register early through ECA website.
