You may have heard or read the very recent news that the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary (AFCC) has been awarded a site in Highland Park, that will be used to develop up to ten 1-bedroom units for Indigenous elders. The site in question is located on 34 Ave NE, and is currently a vacant lot right behind the Barbecues Galore. It was one of three City-owned parcels offered to non-profit organizations at below market value in order to develop more affordable housing. We look forward to discussions with representatives of the AFCC to learn more about their vision and plans for this site.
I encourage everyone to read Greg Miller’s informative article in this newsletter issue regarding the status of the Guidebook for Great Communities, and the North Hill Communities Local Area Plan (NHCLAP) initiatives that have been underway for several years. Greg is a member of the Board of the Association and is our current lead of our Planning and Development Committee. He has been an active representative of Highland Park on both those projects.
We are now in day two of some more restrictive measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The daily news about the rising number of cases is concerning – especially for those who are more vulnerable to serious complications. As hospitalizations increase and ICU beds fill up, I ask everyone to heed the advice of our medical professionals. Let’s all pitch in to help control the spread of this virus, so that when the holiday season arrives in just a few weeks, we won’t be facing a more stringent lockdown situation. Stay well, stay healthy, and keep in mind that your actions can affect the health of others.
Regrettably, with the COVID restrictions in place, access to our newly renovated community centre is limited. However, you can view photos of our beautifully renovated Main and North halls, and Lobby, at our webpage https://www.highlandparkcommunity.ca/hall-rental/info. With these enhancements, the Highland Park Community Centre is truly a place worth considering as a venue for your group meetings or events [subject to COVID restrictions]. The Board of the Highland Park Community Association wishes everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Season’s Greetings!
