With winter upon us, I’m wishing you and your family a warm and safe entry into the season. Please remember that many folks are still walking in our neighbourhood and that clear sidewalks help to ensure mobility for some and safety for all. If you have an extra few minutes when you are clearing your walkways, please help a neighbour by clearing further than just your property line to make our community a safer place to trek!
First let me remind you of a couple of community events.

Sears Plume:
Over the past two decades, the Hounsfield Heights-Briar Hill Community Association (HH-BH CA) has worked on behalf of the community on the ‘Sears Plume’ issue to try and ensure continued focus and efforts to manage the plume. Until now, we’ve had a dedicated board role responsible for tracking and communicating any activity related to the Sears Plume. The Board believes that the interests of the community are now best served by Alberta Environment and Parks as they have put into place Environmental Protection Order (NO. EPO-2018101-SSR) to manage the ‘Sears Plume’. The HH-BH Community Association will now step back from any further management efforts related to the Sears Plume. The HH-BH CA will continue to post all items provided by various parties in regard to the ‘Sears Plume’ on our website. Sears has also set up a website for official Environmental Order communications to residents, https://searscanadaepo.sears.ca/.
The HH-BH CA Board is also aware of the formation of a group, the Hounsfield Heights Landowners Group (HHLG), of potentially affected residents who have engaged legal counsel, Mr. Gavin Fitch of McLennan Ross LLP, to further their specific interests and concerns with respect to the ‘Sears Plume’. The only means of contacting the HHLG that the HH-BH CA Board is aware of is via Mr. Fitch. To the best of the Board’s knowledge the HHLG and its members do NOT represent the entire community of potentially impacted residents.
As of the writing of this message, the mediation session has not occurred as there’s been a request by an unnamed group to be named as a party to the Environmental Protection Order which is under review. The decision on this is expected to be delivered in early October 2018.
Louise Riley Library Development:
There have been no updates on this, however, we expect more information once the municipal budget has been approved sometime in November.
Louise Riley Library Fire Engine/Children’s Program:
As of writing this note, the development permit and engagement process are continuing with a focus on the parking implications of the plan. Please watch our website, http://www.hh-bh.ca/, for dates and further information.
Alberta Health Services Development on the ADDAC property:
The Alberta Health Services (AHS) has held two more community engagements sessions and as this project progresses, AHS has committed to ongoing engagement – including in its meeting with the city for planning approvals. Please watch our website, http://www.hh-bh.ca/, for dates and further information.
Please remember your attendance is always welcome at the Board meetings, which are held at 7:00 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month from September through June at the HH-BH Community Hall at 1922 – 14 Avenue NW. Attending these meetings is a great way to stay up to date on what is happening and to ensure your ideas and concerns are heard and incorporated into the management of the community association. To include an item on the agenda please contact [email protected] at least 2 weeks prior to the meeting.
