Presidents Message MidSun

Hi everyone!

My goodness, it is November, which means I’ve been president for a whole year.

I remember when I took over as president, how I thought the year would be quiet, smooth, no big projects on the horizon, nothing really planned out of the ordinary. We had some good ideas, a few things we wanted to accomplish, nothing particularly different.

December and January were pretty much as planned. In February, things were right on track, although there was a little talk of a virus that might be a problem. Then… well, we all know what happened then. Suddenly we were in a place none of us had ever been before, dealing with things we had no experience dealing with at all. At the community centre, we had to cancel our programs and our rentals, and even our out-of-school care program. We couldn’t run our wonderful day-camps, and we had to shut down the center for a number of months. We had to stop our newly started senior’s group. Our traffic director couldn’t make any progress for a number of months. We weren’t positive our playground committee could do much towards our hoped-for playground, and we weren’t even sure we could have a community garden. Our office staff and some of the rest of us spent hours (or more like days) attending presentations on how to deal with an ever changing situation, reading rules that sometimes seemed to contradict each other, and restrictions that we weren’t sure applied to us. We couldn’t meet in person, so we had to do a quick transition to online, with little training on how to make that work. Through all that, our office staff were exceptionally wonderful, and the board was amazing… supportive, always upbeat, and ready to take on new technology without blinking an eye.

So here we are! Our community garden was terrific. Our facility is completely rented out. We are running a number of programs, and most of them are full. Our seniors’ group has started up again. Our out-of-school care program is running. Our traffic director, Ian Laird, has had some very positive meetings. Our playground committee pulled off a miracle and built the playground on Sunlake Road. Our social media presence is growing. The board regularly meetings online, and it works just fine! These would all be major accomplishments any year, but considering the circumstances of 2020, these are all downright astounding. A big huge thank you to everyone for making this happen.

November also brings our Mid-Sun Annual General Meeting, where we report on our work in the past year and elect the board for the coming year. This year’s AGM will be held November 4, at 8:00 pm, with some options for both in person and online attendance. Please do consider coming, either in person or online. Go to the website at www.midsun.org for more information. New board members would also be very welcome! Contact me if you have any questions!
