Yahoo, April! That has to mean the end of winter, although I do recall large dumps of snow in April every so often. Even if that does happen, the snow doesn’t hang around for long so we can look forward to warm spring breezes and ice-free walks in Fish Creek Park and along our lovely walking paths.
While it might not quite look or feel like it yet, April means it’s almost gardening time and the folks at the Mid-Sun Community Garden are getting ready. Registration for a garden plot opened for everyone April 1 and will close at the garden plant share on Saturday, May 9. The plant share takes place at the Community Centre from 10:30 to 12:00 and everyone is welcome.
April also means that the Spring Programs are underway at the Mid-Sun Community Centre. This spring I’ve signed up for the Meditation Techniques course, as well as “The Best Savasana Ever with Live Music”! I am really enjoying the variety of programs offered at the Centre and am trying to take as many of them as I can fit in.
Speaking of the Mid-Sun programs, our General Manager, Sharmaleigh Luft, and I are excited to be working with Selina Lowe, Vice President of the Sundance Lake Residence Association, and Terri Sinclair, Sundance Lake Office Manager to investigate joint venture opportunities around programming. Also, our Recreation Programmer, Caroline Bees, and I have been invited to speak at the Lake Sundance Town Hall on April 30 at 7:00 pm to overview our mission and programs.
I’ve also had the opportunity to meet with the personnel at Bannister Patch. Patch is a Hull Service Program that provides free support to low income families in meeting their needs for a healthy family life and promote community inclusion. We want to make sure every single resident of Sundance and Midnapore feels part of our community and are delighted to work with the personnel at Bannister Patch to ensure this is happening.
Also coming up in the spring is the Mid-Sun Community Clean-Up. Christian Larioza, Director of Planning and Development, has taken on the coordination of this event. Our Community Clean-Up is scheduled for Sunday, May 31! More details will follow; however, we do need volunteers so if you can spare some time, please drop me an email at [email protected] and I’ll pass the information on to Christian.
One of the board priorities for the year is our social media policies, which is being handled by board member Nikki Compton. Nikki graduated from Coventry University in the United Kingdom with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. After moving to Canada 9 ½ years ago, Nikki worked as a Technical Safety Engineer, then switched to her current profession as a Mortgage Associate. She currently lives in Sundance with her husband and three children ages five, four and twenty months. Nikki joined the board to get more involved in the community and took on the role of Director of Social Media. She is working to provide guidelines for the Mid-Sun Community Association Facebook pages and is hoping to increase and improve our social media presence.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you on social media, seeing you at our plant share, our seniors social on Thursday afternoons, one of our programs at the center or walking in the community enjoying what I’m sure will be a beautiful spring.
