Hoping everyone is staying safe and healthy during this time of change. We are excited to see the Government of Alberta reopening plans and the announcement that community centres are included in Phase 2 of relaunch starting on June 12, 2020. We want to clarify that Riverbend Community Centre continues to be closed.
The Board of Directors is working on reopening plans, but we do not anticipate to fully reopen earlier than September 1.
RCA Annual Membership Drive
Don’t wait for summer to be over to renew your RCA membership! Starting July 1, you will be able to purchase new or renew existing RCA membership early. Starting this year, our membership will be valid for one year from the date of purchase! Never had a membership before? This is the perfect time to buy one to experience everything the RCA has to offer.
Community Centre Renovation Updates
We are using this time as an opportunity to make significant improvements to our facility, and it’s been amazing to be in a position to move forward with these projects. Huge thanks for the support of our Funding Partners including City of Calgary, Government of Alberta, Mission Hill Church, ECCO Recycling and Catalyst!
The following upgrade projects are in progress at the time of the publication.
- Hardwood Floor Refinishing
- New soap, paper towel and hand sanitizer dispensers
- New flooring on the main level (Bow Room, hallway, kitchen) and both staircases
- New lighter plastic folding tables and new plastic stacking chairs that are not going to scratch our new floors, can be easily wiped and sanitized and look amazing!
- New cloud-based security and camera system
- New internal and external access control systems which will replace and vastly streamline the various systems of keys, cards and passcodes
We will include photos of the finished projects in the August issue.
Riverbend School Playground Replacement
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project had been delayed. But with the reopening, it is going full steam ahead this summer! The old playground was removed in mid-June, and the new playground is scheduled to be installed July 15 to 18. Many volunteers are needed to assist with the installation.
New Bike Pathway
The project started on May 28th. The new pathway will be wider (4m instead of 3m) and many water drainage issues will be addressed. Phase 1 between Quarry Park and Riverbend Rock was completed in early June. Phase 2 between Riverbend Community Association and Riverbend Rock is in progress. The final phase between the pedestrian bridge and Carburn Park should be finalized in early July. Due to access challenges the construction team needs to keep the entire pathway system closed as they move heavy machinery. The project is scheduled to take up to mid-July, but they are hoping to be done by end of June, provided there are no weather delays.
Programs and Events
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all RCA indoor and outdoor programs have been cancelled. With Phase 2 reopening, we expect to be resuming our regular programs in the fall. Calgary Young People’s Theatre will be offering day camps in August at the community centre, however, with reduced participant numbers. RCA Softball league will also be restarting this summer.
