Wow! Where did 2019 go? I hope everyone had a merry Christmas season and that you will enjoy a healthy and prosperous year ahead!
The Provincial Government and the City of Calgary Council continue to force difficult financial situations on everyone with their budget cuts, seemingly in every direction. The Community Centre is no less impacted by these budget restraints, but with strong, enthusiastic volunteerism we will continue to do all we can to provide our Community with a hub; a hub from which programs and community events are provided to serve the Community in a cost-effective manner. We welcome you to step into the Community Centre, visit Kathy in the office and look around to see what and when things are happening. Maybe you can volunteer to help?
The fast-growing sport of pickleball continues to flourish with 3-hour playing sessions on the three courts in our gym, available most days and some evenings. Sessions are structured to accommodate skill levels from beginner to advanced players. Check with the office for Introductory Pickleball Lessons. They have been popular and fill up quickly. The Cedarbrae group prides themselves on being a social bunch and enjoyed an evening social party at the end of November. Kudos go out to all who volunteer time and effort to arrange and host the pickleball program, and especially Lynn Champagne, Bill Lane, Darrell Ogden, and Kathy Zabaneh for organizing the recent party.
The City is engaging developed communities such as ours, to participate in establishing development plans for the future. Not just individual communities, as was the case in the past, but multi-communities to act together. Cedarbrae has recently come together with Braeside, Palliser Bayview Pumphill. and Oakridge community associations to discuss working together to develop a Multi-Community Development Plan. At this time, the work is still very much in the beginning phase and can be expected to “coalesce” during the first quarter of 2020. Please watch for your requested opinion and inputs through brief surveys and/or open houses later in 2020. The idea is to “paint a picture” for the City of what the communities might like and the development they might support – and what they would not.
Our expert icemaker volunteers, a hardy bunch who faithfully spend several hours in late evening or very early morning, have been busy preparing our rink ice. By the time you read this there will be some great ice for public skating – feel free to lace up your skates and enjoy the wind in your face while gliding around the ice. Hockey goalposts will be put up for those of you who want to have an informal game. Our annual Winterfest celebration will be at the Centre ice rink on Family Day, February 17, 2020. We hope you can bring the family to join us for games, skating, music, hot drinks and a campfire. We have a selection of ice skates and helmets for anyone to borrow. Watch for more details nearer the date!
