We hope everyone has been enjoying their summer and made many happy memories these last few months. Days have ranged from hot and smoky to downright cold some mornings. You never can predict Calgary weather, can you?
Save a spot on your calendar for Glendale’s This Is My Neighbourhood Backyard Bash on Sept. 8 at Optimist Park. Activities for young and old will be happening in the park near the ball diamonds from 1-4 p.m. Come meet your neighbours as we all get back into our school and work routines. Look out for the Calgary Fire Department, which is turning on the hose for a spectacular spray park. Bring your swimwear!
While our board has not officially met this summer, we have great news to report on many fronts. Grants have been approved for our community garden through the City of Calgary’s This Is My Neighbourhood program and shovels are expected to be in the ground in September. Look for news on our website and Facebook page for a call for construction volunteers to help bring this dream to life and residents with very green thumbs who can help cultivate this beautiful new addition to our community. The garden will be built on the east slope of the tennis courts in an original “Double Turtle” design crafted by Paul McCormick at Green Escape Landscape Design and Construction.
Great Ideas Surface in Community Survey
Community membership and community volunteers are the lifeblood of our community. Monika Smith, membership coordinator, reports that about 50 Glendale residents filled out a brief survey at our Stampede Breakfast. This was a great response and very helpful to find out what programs or interests people would like to see carried out by the community association.
Of the eight categories presented, the highest interest was in sports and movie nights. Residents also expressed enthusiasm for mini sport tournaments, the community gardens, board game nights and couples’ events. Informative talks with expert speakers and seniors’ events also registered significant interest.
Interest was expressed in wine tastings, toddler and child programs and even tween events, crafts programs; and more park activities. One off, but interesting we’re community picnics, adult dances, Spanish lessons for adults and outdoor boot camps for Golden Agers.
This information will be incorporated in the marketing plan that is underway through the ‘This is My Neighbourhood’ programming. And, the board will be working on a project or two that were listed. We would like to establish some seniors programming and we would love to hear from volunteers with ideas and a little time who could help create something.
