Mark your Calendar: Glendale Street Sweeping on June 13, 2023
Street sweeping in Glendale will take place on June 13. Residential street sweeping runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. On sweeping day, please remember to move your car. Driveways, garages, and alleyways are great alternatives (be sure to leave enough clearance). New Fees Coming for Glendale Parking Permits
Almost 400 Glendale homeowners will face extra charges for parking on the street in front of their homes when their current free residential parking permits expire after May 2023.
The annual charges are $50 for the first vehicle, $75 for the second, and $125 to park a third vehicle. Visitor passes are $75 a year and homeowners have to register their visitors when parked on their street.
The new fees affect most homes north of Glendale’s greenbelt on streets and alleys that currently have parking restrictions. See the map printed here that shows affected streets and alleys with current parking restrictions. Residents who have concerns with the new program can express them to the Ward 6 Councillor’s office by emailing [email protected].
Calgary City Council approved a new residential parking policy in January 2021. The parking rates were approved by Council as part of the City’s $4 billion 2023 budget, Councillor Richard Pootmans told the Glendale Board at its April meeting. Also attending was Chris Blaschuk of the Calgary Parking Authority. He said the new program is designed to recover the annual $1.8 million administrative costs of the City’s parking program.
Community Hall Reconstruction Making Great Progress
Restoration and renovation work at the Glendale Community Hall is making significant gains this spring. From the outside, you can see new roofing and gutters have been installed while a new main entrance door was roughed in on the south wall in April.
Inside, the guts of the building have been completely revamped with new boilers installed, new HVAC ductwork that will carry air conditioning and heating, new washroom and kitchen plumbing, fire safety devices, and upgraded electrical wiring and panels.
The work is part of a $1.2 million renovation and restoration project brought on after a catastrophic sewer backup that damaged the hall in January 2021. The project is being led by The City of Calgary’s Facilities Management Team, consulting engineers Morrison-Hershfield, and Hurst Construction.
Completion for the project is expected by the end of June. Glendale hopes to resurrect its annual Stampede Breakfast on July 15 to welcome the community back to the centre.
Get Your Tennis/Pickleball Membership
Glendale community members are welcome to purchase the 2023 Tennis and Pickleball membership right now. For just $70, members get access to two newly resurfaced tennis courts and three pickleball courts. There are also pickleball nets, paddles, and balls in the locked storage box outside the west end of the hockey rink. New members will also be charged a $20 key deposit. Fire Safety
There was a significant fire in Glendale in February, which resulted in the complete destruction of a detached garage and exterior damage to the neighbouring garage. This is an unfortunate reminder that housefires still occur and we can all do more to help prevent them or limit the damage.
Fire home safety must-haves:
• Smoke detectors
• Carbon monoxide detector
• Fire extinguisher
• Fire safety escape plan
• Ground fault circuit interrupters installed
• Arc-fault circuit interrupters installed
• Test smoke/CO detectors and replace expired units
We can also help look out for each other. If you see something, say something. Some of us leave our homes unoccupied for a period of time to go on vacation. Or there might be a lag time between occupants in a rental home. It’s important to always have someone like a friend or neighbour check on your house regularly for hazards or suspicious activity while it is unoccupied. Your insurance company might require evidence of this to fulfill a claim as well. Stay safe, Glendale residents!
Easter Scavenger Hunt
On Easter Sunday, April 9, families around our community came together at Turtle Hill Park for a fun Easter scavenger hunt, kindly hosted by Yarmoloy Real Estate Group. Nelson and Rebecca Yarmoloy, who live right on the edge of the park, provided pencils and cards with Easter-related pictures on them. Children were seen running across the park throughout the day, searching for matching hidden pictures, and enjoying some time outside in the sunny spring weather. Rebecca estimated that around 70 children took part in the festivities. This is the second year that the couple has hosted this event, one that we know is greatly appreciated by the community.
