Oakridge Community Garden Update

Community Newsletter Oakridge

Harvesting of our OCG produce has continued throughout September and early October. We continue to get new members, some who are now planting garlic. With frost approaching, gardeners have been encouraged to harvest their ‘frost susceptible’ produce and start to winterize their raised beds. Our ‘Pollinator raised beds’ and separate flower containers are attracting bees and butterflies. Our sunflowers are the “sunny faced giants” of our garden this year. We continue to visit other gardens, share our learnings, and swap recipes among the OCG members

We now have most plots allocated for the 2021 growing season, so we are looking at building more raised beds in the Spring with new volunteer support and membership. We also have several OCG sub committees looking at longer term plans, for vertical gardens, perennial beds, an herb garden, seating areas, and if we get extra funding, sheds and greenhouses. We plan to build the start of our Vertical Gardens in October. We are hoping many Oakridge residents will see our accomplishments to date and join our Fall/Winter and Spring activities.

Membership is still through www.oakridgecommunity.ca

We are trying to keep this updated as well as via other Social Media channels. Now that we have an upgraded OCA website, we hope to communicate these events more effectively to you at https://www.oakridgecommunity.ca/activities-new/community-garden/.

Information is also posted at https://www.oakridgemonitor.com/.

Questions can be sent to [email protected].

We were fortunate to get the City to install a permanent water supply from the irrigation system, so that saves any connection into the main OCA building.

We had a successful ‘Concert in the Garden’ with Paul Finkleman on Wednesday, September 9 and subsequently an ‘Oakridge Community Drum Circle with ‘Circles of Rhythm’ sponsored by the OSA in collaboration with the OCG.

We plan to have some light and other decorations, dress up, and pumpkin carving activities at the OCG over the Halloween season. See websites for details as they are firmed up. We also plan to participate with the OCA ’50th Anniversary Celebration’ with lighting up the Oakridge neighbourhood and the OCG Garden. Finally, we are also planning to create a “Winter Wonderland” in the Garden over year end.

We encourage members and residents to join the OCA and OCG and participate in our exciting upcoming events.
