Rutland Park’s Development and Traffic Report

I would just like to highlight what has been happening behind the scenes this past month, in no particular order:

  1. We are at an exciting stage in terms of development in our communities. Currie continues its build-out, including single family homes, multi-unit residential, and change of use to a medical clinic. Rutland Park has had several contextual development applications, as well as a discretionary build for an attached garage. While there may be a few growing pains along the way, our communities continue thrive and improve.
  2. I followed up with Jacqueline Oriold at the City regarding our pedestrian safety concerns on Sarcee Road and Richmond Road. They will investigate additional improvements to signage (crosswalk and parking related), and will look into traffic calming curb treatments at Kerrydale Road.
  3. The City continues to finalize the bus route changes—these will be available online in November. They will hold information sessions in late November and early December.
  4. Council is considering a motion to allow parking stall relaxations accommodating secondary suites in semi-detached homes in established communities (effectively to turn R-C2 lots into 4-plexes). I have written to the City asking them to insist that all applicants are compliant with restrictive covenants on their lots before an application is considered. I have also asked that they do not permit any parking stall relaxations on our lots with restrictive covenants—better to dissuade developers from overstepping the covenants before legal action is required. Only 12% of our housing is single family, another 30% is designated for 2 housing units, and the other 60% in our community is already higher density. Currie Barracks will, of course, be much higher density. The restrictive covenants help us maintain variety in our housing stock, and also protect both our urban canopy and the character of our community. Thank you for your support.
