A fresh page, clean slate, a new year. The new year is time for reflection: what can we do better? how can we be better? The last two years have tested the bounds of our patience, changing the rules we live by day to day. Just maybe, this year we will be able to make a plan, maybe for self improvement, hopefully for travel and group celebrations. I am optimistic!

The New Year sees the SCA moving into 2022 with a strong renewed Board of Directors, fresh ideas, and input. We always have room for one more, so if you would like to be part of the SCA team contact me at [email protected] and we can chat. Just as we celebrate our new board members, we bid a fond farewell to Marlene Bainborough who has served as the SCA Secretary and played a pivotal role planning events and programs. Long before her involvement on the SCA Board, Marlene was a faithful volunteer for SCA events and a smiling face at every SCA AGM. The SCA hopes to continue its relationship with Marlene as a volunteer – events wouldn’t be the same without her!

I encourage you to visit the SCA website at www.scacalgary.ca, for information about upcoming events and programs. In addition to the SCA’s regular programming, we have added some new programs, and registration for the winter session is open – so take a look, you just might find something that is a perfect fit.

On Monday, February 21, Family Day, the SCA is hosting a Winter Festival. In addition to the usual skating party (weather permitting), we are planning an Outdoor Craft Market, snowman building contest, and other family friendly activities. I look forward to the community coming together to celebrate Family Day with us at the SCA. Vaccine passports and face coverings are still mandatory if entering the SCA building, and we encourage social distancing and masking outdoors for this event. Our rink volunteers are instrumental for events like this and if you would like to be part of their team, please contact [email protected] to add your name to the list.

Ever stand at your kitchen window in the morning, sipping your coffee and wonder “what are they building in that empty field behind my house?” The City of Calgary has a development map that is a great resource for new development permits and land use redesignations: https://developmentmap.calgary.ca/. Be proactive and stay informed about how your community may be changing.

I could lose a few pounds, walk more, and clean my windows, but I think for this year my resolution will be to try and be flexible with change. Nothing has taught me like the last two years that you have to role with change, accept that we can take steps that may be uncomfortable and inconvenient but keep us safe. And maybe I will work on losing a few pounds too.

Maureen Smith – SCA President
