September was not only the start of a new school year, it was also the start of a new year for our community association. For starters, September was membership month with the entire month dedicated to our yearly membership drive. The yearly WCA memberships are issued in September and expire August 31st the following year. This past month, community residents volunteered countless hours to canvas the community, raise awareness, and sell community memberships. Thank you everyone for your contributions and efforts.
A few weeks ago, on September 13th a grassroots event, Trees of Love, was launched. This event entailed the tying of green and yellow flagging material, in remembrance of the Humboldt Broncos, around trees located on City of Calgary property throughout the community. This project was a collaboration between the City of Calgary, Calgary Parks, WCA, and the three elementary schools in our community. This event was unique in that it was a first of its kind for the City of Calgary and, to my knowledge, the first to garner support from Calgary Parks. This event was brought forth by community resident Judy McKearney last spring and, with the assistance of WCA Board Member Cheryl MacLeod, turned into reality.
The annual fall Community Clean Up was held on Saturday, September 15th and resulted in many City compactor trucks being filled, a bewildering amount of paint collected, a c-can filled with recycling, an enormous amount of paper shredded, and thousands of pounds of recyclable metal collected. A lot of coordination goes into lining up each of the recycling contractors, coordinating with the City, and finding WCA volunteers for event day. On behalf of the WCA, I would like to thank Syl Zacher, Joe Cavar, Cec Jahrig, and Joe Lazowski for their countless hours and dedication to helping keep our community a little bit cleaner and junk free.
In keeping with this being a busy month, on the following day, we held the SOGO Adventure Running children’s event. Despite the poor weather, the event was enjoyable and something we would consider repeating. Fall would not be fall without Oktoberfest, this year planned for Sept 22nd. Rounding out the month was the Calgary Woodcreek Lions Garage Sale on Sept. 29th.
Overall, it was a great start to the year and likely the busiest one to date! Looking forward to October, we have the annual Children’s Safe Halloween Party on October 20th. This year the event runs from 6:00pm – 7:30pm and I encourage everyone to bring a donation to the Food Bank, come early and come in costume! In November things pick up again with the WCA Craft Sale, Spaghetti Dinner, and our AGM.
