Fishing for education? If you spotted a yellow fish on the Parkland streets this fall, you weren’t seeing things. The grade four students at Prince of Wales Elementary School (POW) were participating in Trout Unlimited Canada’s Yellow Fish Road program.

Bryna and Regine, Grade 4, report their experience:

There were three activities. First, picking up garbage; second, painting a sign “waste only” in front of the storm-drains; third, we handed out pamphlets. After we did all those activities, we felt really proud of ourselves. We really hope you got inspired and you will do the same.

Here are important facts as to why we need to keep our storm drains clear.

  1. When we litter near the storm drains our litter transports into the storm drain. When our litter falls into the river/ocean it does not improve the environment because the fish and other sea creatures will swallow our trash.
  2. When fish and sea creatures eat the trash they slowly suffer from the trash and then die. And other creatures eat the fish and other creatures die. Sometimes fishermen will capture the fish that are already infected and will sell them. Then we will eat it!

Students thrived upon the opportunity to help their community and made a real connection to how we can help the earth. This work guided further conversations about how we impact our world and ways to reduce, reuse, recycle and ultimately rethink choices.

Way to go grade fours and thank you to our Parkland neighbours for supporting our community in reducing litter.

Happy holidays on behalf of students and staff at Prince of Wales to the Parkland community!
