National Child Day – Part 2

National Child Day is celebrated in Canada on November 20 in recognition of our country’s commitment to upholding the rights of children and two historic events: the 1959 signing of the UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Last month we shared the ‘Unfinished Business’ that Canada, and specifically Alberta, has when it comes to protecting the Rights of Children. Too many of our children are not having their basic needs met. Basic needs are human rights. To help bring awareness and action to these issues, here’s how YOU can help celebrate National Child Day:

  • Wear Blue on November 20th
  • Donate supplies for families and children to a community organization
  • Talk to a child about what makes them feel happy, healthy, and safe
  • Watch a video about children’s rights
  • Spend fifteen minutes reading aloud to a child in your life
  • Join the worldwide conversation using the hashtags #NationalChildDay, #NCD2019, and #ChildrenHaveRights
  • Visit nationalchildday.ca/events/ to find an event near you!

“All children’s human rights apply to all children at all times, without exception” (unicef.ca). Providing and protecting children is the primary responsibility of each of us and realizing that promise is an ongoing commitment we must all make.
