The Provincial Election has come and gone, and we want to thank everyone who participated in the ‘I’m Voting for Kids’ Campaign—we started many valuable conversations about the importance of investing in the early years… and now the real work begins!

Child Care and Education often become what we call “Nosepicker Issues” – they’re easy to grab at when they’re just dangling there, but to really solve the problem you have to get a little…deeper. Candidates run on platforms that promise solutions and need to be held accountable for them. We can’t allow the fire of election season to fizzle when immediate action is required in order to help Calgary’s children.

So, what can you do?

  • Join your local Early Childhood Coalition of Alberta (of which we’re one) to channel your ideas and energy into collective impact.
  • Write your elected official to express concern and/or support for their family policies.
  • Mobilize around one of the many issues facing children today! Do you strongly believe in active lifestyles? Volunteer for an organization that helps children develop their physical literacy skills! More of a 3 R’s person? There are lots of organizations working in childhood literacy and numeracy. Passionate about child poverty? Supporting small family businesses? Parental Mental Health? We challenge you to get creative in how you help every child in Calgary to reach their optimal development!

As Nelson Mandela famously said: “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.”
