“I’m not a dreamer, and I’m not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to.” – Terry Fox

On September 13 the Prince of Wales (POW) school community was honoured to host a very special guest Fred Fox, brother of Terry Fox. Fred visited with students, teachers, volunteers, and supporters of the Terry Fox Foundation. Fred came to POW to recognize the school’s participation in the Terry Fox Run. He presented a slide show, recalling memories of Terry and him as kids, and what he remembered about the Marathon of Hope.

“Terry held so many values that kids can look up to today. Working hard, never giving up, and finishing what you start,” said Fred.

Students started fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation over the summer, pledging to do the fun run along the Fish Creek Park ridge. The run was combined with a head shave event, where a number of students faced scissors and trimmers in the memory of a loved one. Thank you to all who supported POW students, and congratulations to everyone for their fundraising.

Back to school events in September also included the annual book fair and Orange Shirt Day. At the book fair, parents, students and teachers bought their favourite titles while raising funds for the school.

By recognizing Orange Shirt Day, students and teachers acknowledged the harm of the residential school system to children and affirmed their commitment that everyone around them matters. It was an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying education for the coming school year.

Thank you to parents and the school’s Parkland neighbours for respecting and using the crosswalks, not parking in the bus zone, and for remembering to keep safety on the streets outside the school as a top priority.
