I would just like to highlight what has been happening/going on behind the scenes this past month, in no particular order:

  1. In addition to the temporary speedbumps we have requested, we followed up with earlier traffic calming measures we had suggested to the City. We have already asked for a traffic study of the Flanders interchange (on a long list), and a stop sign at Mary Dover (City says the traffic level does not warrant one, only a yield sign which is already in place). The other areas we have asked to be addressed in the past are, Richmond Road at Kerrydale (curb extensions have been added), 33 St at Richmond Rd (nothing done and new bus route has more people crossing there), and the pedestrian crosswalk from Valour Park to 40 Ave (nothing done). We have also put in an online suggestion that the parking lane along Richmond Road just as it turns into 32 Ave SW, be extended until there is a boulevard in front of the homes (approximately 3023 32 Ave SW). We have been finding that traffic rips around the corner because people are racing to the lights and it opens into 2 lanes there. This would definitely add to traffic calming as well, since this road will continue to be 50 km/hr, but it is the one with the most accidents in our community. For both 33 St and Valour Park we had requested a pedestrian activated corridor (flashing lights). The City is reluctant to install them because of the cost, but possibly we could get a curb extension at 33 St with a high visibility crosswalk as a back up, and a high visibility crosswalk at Valour Park.
  2. Thank you to all of you who were able to join us for our AGM! Your ongoing support is much appreciated. Thank you to Peter Forte for staying on as Acting President for the next while. The position of President is open, and we would love to have you help us shape the future of our communities. Please consider taking on this extremely important role.
  3. We have had a suggestion to consider cricket as an option for Richmond Green. It is a worldwide sport and is accessible to people of all ages. It is a growing sport, and we do not have a lot of pitches in Calgary. I have put forward this suggestion to our City liaison to be included in the discussions around Richmond Green.
  4. Per a member request, a motion was passed at our AGM looking to survey Rutland Park homeowners with restrictive covenants on their lots, as to whether they would support a change to the restrictive covenants, that would allow for home based businesses which do not generate a lot of traffic or noise (basically to accommodate people with home offices). The RPCA will help do some legwork with regards to the survey, but any changes to the covenants will the responsibility (including cost) of the homeowners who may choose to bring a petition to the Courts.
  5. At our AGM, we also reaffirmed our commitment to the development committee process (and updated the description of the development committee). Thank you, Dave, Gayle, Husayn, and Mark for being on our development committee!
  6. Welcome Danny Greene as a new Director on our Board. We look forward to working with you.
  7. With increased COVID-19 restrictions, we have had to shift to virtual meetings until the restrictions are lifted. If you would like to participate in our monthly board meetings (7:00 pm the second Tuesday of each month), please email president@rutlandparkcommunity.com so that we can include you in our virtual meeting. Thank you for your ongoing support.

If you have not already signed up for our email updates, please do so at our website – rutlandparkcommunity.com. The City often gives us very short notice for upcoming events, and this is the quickest way for us to reach you. Please also join us on Facebook—Rutland Park Community Association, and Currie Community. Thank you for your ongoing support.

I would just like to highlight what has been happening/going on behind the scenes this past month, in no particular order:

  1. As a short-term solution, the City has recommended that Richmond Green be used for disc golf for the 2021 season, until they make decisions about City golf courses as a whole. Unfortunately, they neglected the course for the entire summer, only cutting the grass like a hay field. They will have a lot of work ahead of them in the spring to make it usable for disc golf. I will follow up in the spring to make sure they are moving forward with something that will activate that space. In the meantime, I have contacted both our MP, and our MLA, to remind them that Richmond Green must remain green space in accordance with the special status it was given as part of the CFB West Master Plan.
  2. Given that our MP and our MLA had a town hall meeting, I also reached out to both of them with additional concerns. I asked Greg McLean to encourage Canada Lands to provide community use space for Currie residents, as well as a housing cooperative to provide affordable housing in Currie. I also raised our ongoing concerns with regards to the MDP changes, and the Guidebook for Great Communities—documents which will contravene our restrictive covenants, and give rise to law suits between neighbours if proposed developments fit the City’s mandate, but contravene the restrictive covenants. Areas of concern: a) Put density where density belongs. b) Lack of Engagement, Calgarians are generally not aware of the significant changes. c) No More Single-Family Areas, new bylaw for low-density residential. d) Insufficient Infrastructure, Green Spaces and Heritage Protections, Impacts to infrastructure, green spaces, and heritage. e) Loss of Community-Specific Policies and Contextual Development, Lack of detail in multi-community area plans.
  3. Last year we put in a request for 2 bus shelters on Sarcee Road, around the 4000 block (one on each side of the street for the stops closest to the Hall). I have followed up with the City. We are definitely still on the list, but they budget for only 25 new shelters a year, including new and extended bus routes. Not sure if/when we will get one, but we are definitely still on the list.
  4. We have requested “temporary” speed bumps be installed on auxiliary Sarcee Road, at the bottom of the hill where it connects with 31 St SW. People seem to be whipping around the corner as they enter the playground zone. Hopefully, we will be able to get these installed without a full Traffic Study.
  5. I have written a letter of support for Knox Presbyterian Church’s grant application to provide more activities for our seniors. Social isolation is a huge concern at this time, especially for our seniors, and hopefully this will enable them to get more residents engaged.
  6. The City is intending on changing the parking regulations for businesses, with the intent to allow developers to decide how much parking will be provided. This has the potential to be a huge problem when the Currie business and retail district is built out. We have signed on to a multi Community Association letter asking the City to keep developers accountable and have them cover the cost of parking for the projects they are building. At the very least we are hoping that they will acknowledge that one size does not fit all when it comes to business parking.
  7. Concern has been raised that the reflective warning sign for the curb extension on Sarcee Road at 35 Ave SW may be obstructing the view of traffic entering Sarcee Road at that location. I have put in a 311 request for the City to investigate the sight visibility triangle.

I would just like to highlight what has been happening/going on behind the scenes this past month, in no particular order:

  1. One of our residents has noticed that there is a lot of speeding in the 31 Street playground zone. We are very happy to see that she contacted the Police and 311 to help keep our children safe. The Police noted that there was no “End of Playground Zone” sign and have addressed that issue. The City should have conducted “speed education” in that zone in the middle of October. This is often not enough to slow traffic down, so the CPS will be asked to come and do some ticketing in that area. It appears that the issue is both residents and non-residents. Bottom line-if you live here, you should know better! Slow down in our playground zones! With your help, we will continue to have wonderful, walkable communities
  2. We are happy to see that the City has followed up with traffic calming curb extensions at Richmond Road and Kerrydale. We have asked that they consider doing the same on the Killarney side of Richmond Road. Killarney was very supportive of this suggestion when we first started pushing for it, and, with any luck, we will soon see curb extensions on the north side of Richmond Road at Kerrydale.
  3. Someone (an MRU student maybe?) has spray painted over the 2-hour parking signs along the east side of Sarcee Road near Royal Park. I have contacted the City to ask them to address this.
  4. We have had a resident request for bus shelters on both sides of Sarcee Road at 40 Ave SW. I have put in a request with Calgary Transit-it would benefit not only our seniors, but our Currie ridership on the current 112 route as well.
