When I wrote the last executive message for the April Chronicle, I was lamenting about the weather. March had been a lovely month and I was concerned about what April would bring. Now here we are at the beginning of June, and we just finished a week of + 30-degree weather – wow was that a hot one. I feel weather may become a theme for me…
Regardless of what the weather is when you are reading your Chronicle, I hope you and yours are enjoying the many lovely greenspaces and recreational areas around Woodlands. We are privileged to have Fish Creek Park, basketball courts, a skate park, tennis courts, and pickleball courts right in our neighbourhood. I was talking with a friend over the fence the other day and she was saying how much she loves to see the younger children and pre-teens using the recreation area in Woodbine. She likened them to ducklings riding their scooters, bikes, and skateboards past her home. What a great image!
You will notice a few changes in our community this summer. We are fortunate to be able to support a summer camp for budding engineers and scientists throughout the summer. Zen Maker Lab has rented the hall for August. They will be testing out their creations each week so be sure to plan a stroll by the community centre to see what the campers have spent their time and effort on. We are also supporting Calgary Sport and Social Club by renting out our basketball and rink area in Woodbine and Woodlands for lessons/practice. This will be happening from July 19 to 28 from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. For those of you looking for an excellent preschool, check out Playmakers who will be continuing to offer their program out of the community centre yearly, from September to June. Playmakers offers a lovely blend between in and outdoor programming. These programs help us with longer term sustainability so if you can support them, please do.
We were lucky enough to secure a AGLC Casino at the end of June and, as usual, a shout out to Cec Jahrig for responding with speed and accuracy to get a group of dedicated volunteers together to man our 48 hours on June 28 and June 29. Casinos are an important part of our funding model and without their financial assistance WCA would struggle to continue to offer such quality programs, buildings, and recreational areas.
WCA is slowly opening up the facility with the easing of the restrictions. We will continue to have office hours Monday through Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and will likely extend these hours when the community centre is up and running at its full capacity. We hope to be able to bring back our WCA events as soon as possible. I have a feeling our resident event planner Nora Ward is brimming with ideas of how to celebrate. Keep an eye out for announcements.
Enjoy your summer everyone. Here’s to hoping it involves visits with family and friends, lovely travel plans, hugs, and sunny days.
